Goal: To find out how long a product will last (Time-to-Failure) in a very short amount of time.
Method: The product is subjected to elevated stresses (higher temperature, voltage, pressure, or vibration) significantly beyond normal operating conditions.
Why use it: You cannot wait 10 years to see if a heater lasts 10 years. You run it at high stress to simulate 10 years of wear in just a few weeks or months.
Output: A mathematical calculation (using models like Arrhenius) predicting the product’s lifespan under normal use.
Goal: To verify that the product can withstand the physical wear and tear of operation without breaking or losing performance.
Method: The product is run under expected (or slightly severe) operating conditions, often focusing on specific subsystems (e.g., door hinges, buttons, valves). It focuses on material fatigue and wear mechanisms.
Why use it: To prove the product is „tough“ enough to survive rough handling or continuous usage environments.
Output: Pass/Fail (e.g., „The valve survived 100,000 cycles without leaking“).“
Goal: To simulate the complete lifespan of the product from purchase to disposal under normal usage profiles.
Method: The product is cycled through its typical operational profile (Start -> Heat -> Cool -> Stop) repeatedly. Unlike ALT, this is often done at normal or rated conditions, not necessarily over-stressed ones.
Why use it: To validate warranty claims (e.g., „Guaranteed for 5 years“) and ensure no unexpected failures occur during the standard useful life.
Output: Confirmation that the product meets its rated service life (e.g., „Product operational for 5,000 hours“).“
